Gender reveals have become one of the most important events during a woman’s pregnancy, and how they want the gender to be revealed can be quite exciting. My sister and her fiancé asked me to take on this project last minute, and I was delighted to design their gender reveal box! Since this was created about two days prior to the party, I was only able to fill the inside of the box with a gender reveal balloon that showcased the actual gender. The theme of the party was bumblebee/spring, and the “punchline” was ‘What will the gender bee?”.
In this blog, I will show you how to create a cute, spring-themed gender-reveal box, along with the stores and links where I’ve purchased the items:
The list of products used to make the ‘Gender Reveal Box’ can be found at the end of this post <3
Step 1:
Creating the Box Top:
Make sure your box is right side up and use your box cutter to cut off all four flaps of the box. I’ve provided a digital picture below with red dotted lines, to make it easier for you to see where you will need to cut. I was moving way too fast on this project, and didn’t get to take actual pictures of each step:
If you’ve got the exact cardboard box that I used above, all four flaps should be the same size. In this case, you can grab any two of the flaps and tape them together as shown below (the blue dotted line is where you will need to tape the pieces together). Note: If you decided to get a rectangular box instead, you’ll want to tape together the flaps that completely cover the top of the box.:
With the other two flaps, use your box cutter to cut each flap in half horizontally. You will need to make them the same size:
Now you should have a total of four rectangular flaps and a larger cardboard square which will completely cover the top of the box. Take the four rectangular flaps and tape each one to each side of the larger cardboard square.
After you’ve put together all the parts to create the box top, wrap the box top with the gift-wrapping paper. Now that these steps are complete, your box top should look similar to the below picture:
Step 2:
Wrap the entire box with the gift-wrapping paper. If some of the seams/folds are showing, I would suggest that you use clear glue or hot glue to secure it to the box instead of having tape show on the outside of it.
Step 3:
Making the 3D Decorations:
Paint about 20 of the small styrofoam balls with black and yellow stripes to make them look like little bumblebees, and two of the larger-sized styrofoam balls for the “parent bees”. Note: This is where the toothpicks come in handy. To avoid ruining the paint on the faux bumblebees, you can stick the toothpicks in them and stick the other end in a soft throwaway or a house item, such as a towel or your carpet.
For the bumblebee wings, I used left-over gift-wrapping paper (to save money), drew the wing shapes, and cut out the paper wings. Next, paint the wings with white paint.
Once the paint is completely dry, hot glue the wings onto the faux bumblebees.
Step 4:
Decorating the box top:
Use your clear glue and large paint brush to cover the top of the box top. Completely cover the top with the floral moss, then proceed to brush the glue on the edges and sides of the box top. Glue some of the floral moss on the edges and sides of the box top, to give the illusion of the floral moss hanging off the box top.
Hot glue the artificial flowers towards the front of the box top, some in the center, and around the edges as well. You can also add some of the bumblebees on the box top.
Step 5:
Decorating the box:
Hot glue the bumblebees all over the box and use the clear glue to glue on the confetti as a trail behind the bumblebees.
Add on any finishing touches, and you are done!
You can add additional items to your box, and fill it with anything you’d like to make your family member, spouse, or friend’s gender reveal creative and fun!
